Fiber optic technology can help move a business along at lightning speeds. But what happens when your network begins to slow down, most likely due to dust and grime on your fiber optic cables? If your network seems to be slowing down or crashing periodically, it may just need a good cleaning to remove dust and dirt particles that are blocking the transmission of signals. A good cleaning may be all your cables need to have your network back up to optimal speeds. There are several different options for fiber optic cable cleaners available on the market.

Dry Fiber Optic Cleaners

Fiber ends should always be cleaning using the dry method. This is accomplished by using a device with tape that collects all of dust and dirt particles from the end. These devices can come in the form of a pen or a cassette that looks similar to a dispenser for clear tape.

Fiber Optic Cleaning Fluid

Fiber optic cleaning fluid is alcohol free. Using an alcohol based cleaner may initially get your cables clean but will end up attracting more dust in the long run. The fluid usually comes with wipes for cleaning the cables quickly and easily. These wipes are also designed to leave no lint behind that could compromise your signals on your network. These wipes are available already moist or dry. Wet wipes are recommended for cleaning cables that have been contaminated with oily residue.

Wipes come in different fabrics as well. The best wipes are made of polyester so that they will not leave any lint behind. Cloth or paper wipes can work in a pinch but you need to make sure that no lint particles were left on the cables.

Fiber Optic Cleaning Swabs

These can be used to get into tight areas and trap particles with a cleaning fluid or foam. These can be purchased with the cleaning fluid pre-measured or dry. These are great for cleaning ports, adapters, and connectors.

Air Dusters

Air dusters can be great for a quick touch-up between deep cleanings. Using an air duster periodically can make your next cleaning easier. Be sure that that the duster is specifically made for fiber optic cleaning or at least oil free, as oil will clog your network signals.

Make sure that you pick the right type of cleaner for the job. Different kinds of ports, connectors, cables and adapters use different cleaners.
