Stainless steel wall mount shelving is a good way to increase the amount of storage space in your commercial kitchen. You can use your new shelves to keep utensils, ingredients, and equipment right by the cooking and preparation areas where these items will be used. Here is how you can mount stainless steel shelves on the walls in your commercial kitchen.

You Will Need:

  • Stainless Steel Shelving
  • Level
  • Stud Finder
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Screws
  • Washers

Locating Studs In The Walls

The shelves need to be securely attached to a wall to prevent them from falling down. The items you place on the shelves, along with the weight of the shelves, will typically weigh enough to pull the screws out of walls made of plaster and drywall. You want to sink the screws into the studs inside the wall to ensure the shelves are properly anchored. But first, you have to find the studs. You can use a stud finder to find the studs.

A stud finder uses radar to peer into the wall so you can distinguish between open space and solid space. You turn on the stud finder and slowly move it across the wall until you hear an alarm and the light on the stud finder brightens up – this is the sign that you've found one side of a stud. Mark that spot with your pencil. Slowly keep on moving the stud finder until the alarm and lights go off – this means you've located the other side of the stud. Mark that spot with your pencil. Repeat this process until you've found all the studs that will be within the width of the shelves.

Installing Shelves

You will want to make sure the shelves are level so things don't easily slide off of them. Once you've found your studs, place a level at the height that you want your shelves to be – try and use a level that is as wide as your shelves to make it easier to mark the spots you are going to screw the shelves into the wall. Place the level against the wall and make sure it's even. Draw a faint line with your pencil along the bottom or top edge of the level.

Place one shelf at a time up against the wall and look for the markings indicating where the studs are located. Make sure the shelf is on the pencil line you made with your level. Screw the shelf into the middle of the stud (the middle of the stud is between the two markings you made using the stud finder). Gently pull down on the shelf after you have firmly secured it to the studs to make sure it'll be able to handle weight before you put anything on it. If the shelf feels firmly connected to the studs, you can then load it with the equipment and supplies you want to store on it.
